In the final half hour, this filmmaker put all his cards on the proverbial table, probably howling over how he’s ‘built things up’ by taking us for a ride… and I can respect that. ![]() ![]() This truly felt like one of the laziest approaches to a sequel I’ve seen in quite some time. Sure, a twist or two get tossed into the mix, but they’re far too predictable and leave no impact on the audience. The only plot thread that matters is the ‘brother going after his sister no matter what the cost’ thing… and that’s it. I have no problem when franchises resurface as products meant to act as both sequels and reboots at the same time – this worked considerably well for Star Trek (2009) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens – so I didn’t mind Blair Witch attempting such an ambitious approach, but the film ultimately does nothing to justify it. The first hour of Blair Witch is a pretty blatant remake of the original. Overall, I’m still weirded out why I watched this on Independence Day… The ending of the film was pretty great too as it expands on the Blair Witch lore in a very interesting and cool way. The cinematography was pretty solid for a found footage film, it’s not grand in scale, but those jump-scare shots definitely worked on me. The rest of the cast was pretty good, although some of the performances felt a bit cartoony at times. The best actor in the film is Callie Hernandez, she was excellent and her terror felt super real, especially during the tunnel sequence. The sound design and editing team are the real stars here, they made the whole film have a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere where branches are breaking every second around the characters. I genuinely don’t know how they made this film? Was it a set, a huge one at that? Was it an actual forest? I’m not actually sure, which is why I feel this is a solid effort from Wingard into making a follow-up to a cult classic. ![]() Latest Discussions The Super Mario Bros Movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves John Wick: Chapter 4 Renfield Keanu Reeves Tobey Maguire
